The Ranger 9i is the newest full-size pistol from Miller Precision Firearms: a 5-inch, ported island-barrel 2011 that puts a fixed front-sight block on the barrel itself so the sight never moves with the slide. It arrived alongside the compact 9Ci as the island-barrel generation of the Ranger 9 line, and Miller says a non-ported island barrel will follow as an add-on option.

Underneath it is everything that sets a Ranger apart from a conventional 2011 — the linkless barrel that makes takedown and barrel swaps a no-gunsmith job, the patent-pending Easy Adjust trigger (set here at 2 to 2.5 lb) that lets you tune take-up and overtravel without taking the gun apart, a patent-pending reversible magazine release, ambidextrous slide stop and safeties, an external extractor and Miller’s own optic-plate system with co-witness irons. It ships with a competition magwell, pinned grip safety and blackout sights.

What is an island barrel?

A barrel with an integral front-sight block that rises through the slide ahead of the ejection port. Because the sight is on the barrel rather than the slide, it stays still while the slide cycles; Miller’s island barrels are also ported to cut muzzle rise.

Is the Ranger 9i ported?

Yes, the standard 9i barrel is ported. Miller has said a non-ported island barrel will be offered as an add-on purchase.

How is the 9i different from the Ranger 9X?

The 9X uses a compensator (with a sight block) on a 5-inch package; the 9i uses a ported island barrel with no comp, which keeps the pistol shorter and simpler to clean.
